Aerial Assessment of Liquid in Clouds at Oliktok

The operations include a smaller balloon (compared to the TBS) on an auto-reeler system. The auto-reeler will carry a super-cooled liquid water content sensor, a leaf-wetness sensor, and an i-Met up to an elevation not exceeding 7000 feet above ground level (AGL). The auto-reeler will be used at the same time as the tethered balloon system (TBS) as weather and staffing conditions allow. All data from the auto-reeled balloon will be transmitted and collected at the ground on a computer using NOAA\'s open-source Sky Sonde software. The PI (Roesler) will quality-check the data at Sandia National Laboratories and then deliver the data to the ARM Data Archive within six months of completion of the field campaign. The data collected from these sensors will provide time-dependent, in-situ values of the near-surface cloudy environment at Oliktok Point. This data will be used in a high-resolution atmospheric model to improve understanding of the characteristics of the clouds.
