The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced plans to provide $14 million in new research grants for Atmospheric System Research (ASR) program science.
Successful applicants will focus their research on observational, data analysis, and/or modeling studies that use observations supported by DOE’s Biological and Environmental Research (BER) program, including the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility, to improve understanding and model representation of:
- aerosol-cloud interactions
- aerosol processes affecting cloud life cycle, properties, and/or processes
- convective cloud processes
- high-latitude atmospheric processes.

“America’s leadership in the climate sciences dates back to the earliest general circulation models of the 1950s, and DOE investments in the atmospheric sciences have been critical to our nation’s overall leadership in making accurate projections of climate change and impacts on society,” said Sharlene Weatherwax, DOE Associate Director of Science for Biological and Environmental Research in a DOE announcement. “These grants will ensure a strong atmospheric sciences program and expand the robust scientific workforce of our country, which will lead to improved understanding of atmospheric Earth systems that play important roles in addressing the nation’s climate challenge.”
Funding is to be awarded competitively, based on peer review, and is expected to be in the form of three-year grants with total award amounts ranging from $200,000 to $900,000, beginning in fiscal year 2022.
Pre-applications are required and should contain a concise description of the objectives and the technical approach of the proposed research that makes clear how the proposed research responds to the research topics of the FOA.
Pre-applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. Eastern time on Wednesday, November 3, 2021. Applicants will receive a response from DOE by November 23, and formal applications will be due January 11, 2022.
