Best Estimate Data Available for Sensible and Latent Heat Fluxes at the SGP

Data from the BAEBBR VAP from 1993 through 2008 are now available at the ARM Data Archive.

Data from the Bulk Aerodynamic Energy Balance Bowen Ratio (EBBR) Station, or BAEBBR, Value-Added Product (VAP) are now available at the ARCF Data Archive for the period 1993 through 2008 at the 15 Southern Great Plains (SGP) extended facilities with EBBR measurements. The BAEBBR VAP produces a “best estimate” of sensible and latent heat fluxes by implementing a bulk aerodynamic algorithm to provide estimates of sensible and latent heat fluxes when values from the EBBR systems cannot be used. Primary measurements for the BAEBBR VAP include:

  • aerodynamic latent heat flux
  • aerodynamic sensible heat flux
  • best estimate latent heat flux
  • best estimate sensible heat flux
  • estimated vegetation height.

In the past year, significant enhancements have been added to the original BAEBBR VAP process. The VAP has been updated to use site-specific height values for the automatic exchange mechanism (AEM) levels and wind speed measurement, instead of fixed values. Vegetation height information from the SGP site operations is now provided monthly, and the monthly VAP processing is automated. Data for 2009 and onwards will be processed monthly at the Data Management Facility. In addition to the mentor quality control checks on the input EBBR data, a set of quality control checks have been implemented on the five primary measurements produced by the BAEBBR VAP. Finally, the variable names have been standardized to follow the ARM naming conventions. To learn more, go to the BAEBBR VAP web page or contact Sally McFarlane, Shaocheng Xie, or David Cook.

These data (and more) are freely available in the ARM Data Archive. The first time you visit the Archive you will need to create a new account—a relatively short form asking for contact information—you can use right away. Order BAEBBR data now.
