DARLGTDET

Darwin Lightning Detection

13 December 2004 - 31 January 2006

Lead Scientist: Zen Kawasaki

Observatory: TWP

Lightning Research Group of Osaka University (LRGOU) had been developing the VHF Broadband Digital Interferometer (VHF BDITF) to monitor lightning activity. The system owned the 1 microsecond time resolution, and real time lightning channel imaging was available. Because of high time resolution, the system enabled us to monitor the evolution of thunderstorm system and its activity. LRGOU had conducted field campaign around Darwin for these ten years. During campaigns LRGOU could confirm that VHF BDITF was the operational system. Then LRGOU believed that it was time to realize the continuous operation of VHF BDITF for one or two year. LRGOU intended to realize the data fusion of lightning data and Radar data, and expected the contribution of efficient storm forecasting.
