GeoCarb Calibration Campaign

1 September 2021 - 31 January 2023

Lead Scientist: Sean Crowell

Observatory: sgp

The GeoCarb Team at the University of Oklahoma conducts the science operations for the Geostationary Carbon Cycle Observatory (GeoCarb) satellite mission in conjunction with NASA and Lockheed Martin. The GeoCarb satellite will monitor concentrations of carbon-based pollutants, such as CO2, CH4, and CO, over the Americas to provide critical information about the Earth’s changing climate. The purpose of this field campaign is to validate the measurements taken by the team’s EM27/Sun, a Bruker Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer, using the ARM Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) station. The EM27/Sun operates similarly to the IFS 125HR used by TCCON, allowing for direct comparison of total column concentration data. With proper validation, the EM27/Sun will be used in turn for ground-based validation of the GeoCarb satellite in 2021 and 2022 prior to its launch. This campaign also serves to prepare the GeoCarb Team for future EM27/Sun deployments focused on urban emissions, existing satellite validation, and coastal meteorology.
