Possibilities of Rainfall-Rate Estimates from MMCR Measurements

The vertically-pointing ARM 8 mm cloud radars are widely used for retrievals of cloud parameters. Attempts to quantitatively retrieve precipitation parameters (excluding drizzle properties) have been scarce. These retrievals are hampered by the saturation of strong radar returns, Mie scattering effects and significant attenuation of millimeter wavelength radiation in rain. It is often possible, however, to extract quantitative information about precipitation from MMCR measurements. This poster will discuss different approaches for rainfall rates retrievals from MMCR measurements. The uncertainty estimates and some retrieval examples will be given.
