New ARM PI Product—Merged MMCR and WSR-88D Data Sets

Published: 6 March 2008

A new ARM Principal Investigator (PI) product—Merged MMCR and WSR-88D Data sets (PI:X. Dong)—is now available at the ARM Climate Research Facility Data Archive. This data set merges Millimeter Wavelength Cloud Radar (MMCR) reflectivity data with National Weather Service precipitation radar (WSR-88D) observations to provide improved radar reflectivity profiles in situations where the MMCR signal is attenuated. These data may be retrieved from the ARM Archive at http://www.db.arm.gov/cgi-bin/PIP/viewPIP.pl?pipNo=4.

Overview:
Since there are substantial attenuations of MMCR signals for large liquid water path (LWP) and precipitation, we have used the nearest precipitation radar (WSR-88D) to merge two measurements for best representing such selected cases in order to compensate the drawback of the MMCR measurements. In the near future, we are going to provide all the cumulus cases from January 1997 to present whenever the two data sets are available.
