Report from the Ron Brown: July 17, 1999
|
Commentary: We finished securing vans and departed for Kwajalein at 1840 yesterday, bidding fond farewells to our many old and new friends on Nauru. At about 0930 today we experienced a sudden change in seasons (winter to summer) as we crossed the equator. To the joy of all, the ship's laundry was opened for a few hours today. Doc treated 17 casualties in the ensuing stampede. The last radio contact with Nauru occurred at 0830 today. The next stop is Kwajalein, with some seafloor mapping before docking (at the request of NOAA ship Ka'imimoana, which will deploy buoys for the Kwajalein Experiment [KWAJEX], the Ron Brown's next mission).
Visual Observations: There were more stratoform clouds today, otherwise very similar to most other days on the cruise. Instrument Status: All are down and stowed except for the ceilometer, Depolarization Aerosol and Backscatter Unattended Lidar (DABUL), wind profiler, and flux system. Previous Days' Updates: July
