Report from the Ron Brown: July 13, 1999
|
Commentary: We got in 18 hours of good aerosol characterization yesterday before the wind died, ending the planned plume work. We are back on the windward side of Nauru making water, but the laundry is still secured. Today is a day for rest while radiation measurements upwind of the Atmosphere Radiation and Cloud Station (ARCS) continue. Three-dimensional color graphics of the Ron Brown bathymetric data surrounding Nauru are a big hit. A new tee-shirt industry may be in the making!
Visual Observations: A strong band of rain showers passed just to our north in the morning. Since then it has been a typical day with marine boundary layer cumuli and broken cirrus. Instrument Status: The Depolarization Aerosol and Backscatter Unattended Lidar (DABUL) lives! Spare parts carried by Otten and installed by Wulfmeyer, and preparations by Sandberg, resulted in data acquisition just after nightfall July 12. Expert crane work in rolling seas got DABUL from below decks starboard to the 02 level portside, but not without a few tense moments. Previous Days' Updates: July
