Report from the Ron Brown: July 12, 1999
|
Commentary: We are in the midst of characterizing the aerosol plume at several distances leeward of Nauru, in an attempt to extrapolate plume properties to the Atmosphere Radiation and Cloud Station (ARCS) site. Jeff Otten's luggage appeared as advertised today, much to our amazement and pleasure. Chuck Long visited the ship to review circumnavigation data and set priorities for remaining days; while he visited, several RHBers toured abandoned WW II Japanese artillery guns on Command Ridge on Nauru. The ship is low on water again, so the laundry has been secured (another reason we rejoiced when Jeff got clean clothes!).
Visual Observations: Diffuse sunlight again today due to ubiquitous cirrus, plus marine boundary layer cumuli. Light to moderate winds. Instrument Status: An attempt is being made to repair the Depolarization Aerosol and Backscatter Unattended Lidar (DABUL) with parts that arrived in Otten's luggage. Lidar crews are beginning to wear down with round-the-clock operations. Previous Days' Updates: July
