Report from Nauru: July 17, 1999
|
Commentary: The Nauru99 island site experimental period officially came to an end at local noon today, 00Z July 17, 1999 Universal Time Coordinate (UTC). To celebrate, we all took a break from packing up the radios used during the experiment and went to lunch. We then came back and kept packing. By day's end we had managed to pack up all the ancillary instruments at the site that are leaving. The Cimel sun photometer will remain as a "permanent" part of the Nauru Atmospheric Radiation and Cloud Station (ARCS2) site. The cavity radiometer will also remain, in the hopes that during the upcoming RESET visit in a few weeks they can get it working and make comparison measurements with the ARCS normal incidence pyrheliometer (NIP). The top side meteorological towers will be brought to the site and installed tomorrow. They will be left operating as they have been for a longer-term comparison with the ARCS instrumentation. This will allow better characterization to help in the comparative analysis of the Nauru99 data collected. All those who are left here feel that this has been a highly successful effort. These folks have worked very hard on the island to make it such a success, and an enjoyable experience. I think we have had a wonderful crew and would like to once again give a big THANK YOU to all.
Visual Observations: There are lots of thin cirrus clouds again today, with occasional top of the boundary layer (TBL)cumulus (Cu) clouds. It is hotter and more muggy than yesterday. No snow and no skiers, either. There was an ominous large gray cloud mass to the east as we left the site at day's end... Instrument Status: Atmospheric Radiation and Cloud Station (ARCS2) Site Instruments: All instruments are working just fine. Nauru99 Ancillary Instruments: All instruments are packed up at the site. The top-side meteorological stations will run until tomorrow. Previous Days' Updates: July
