Welcome to our Correspondent's Corner. During the campaign, we posted updates and images that we received from our scientists on the scene. Weekly highlights are also provided. Nauru Island | Ron Brown | Mirai
Final Weekly Highlights, July 13-20, 1999 The Nauru99 island site experimental period officially ended July 17 at noon local time. During the final days of the campaign, the Ron Brown circumnavigated Nauru and scientists intercompared instrument readings from the island and ship. On July 15, the ship completed a very successful 24-hour period of circumnavigations of Nauru at 1 km off the beach, 2 hours each circuit. Scientists on the Ron Brown and at the DOE/ARM site packed instruments in preparation for shipment home. Some instruments will remain at the DOE ARM site on the island, including the Cimel sun photometer and the cavity radiometer. Top-side meteorological towers will also be installed for a longer-term comparison with the Atmospheric Radiation and Cloud Station (ARCS) instrumentation at the site. This will allow better characterization and help in the comparative analysis of the Nauru99 data. DOE and NOAA staff continued interactions with Nauru citizens. Media from a local newspaper and television station visited the sited during the last days of the campaign. They interviewed scientists at the site and videotaped a sonde launch. Two sets of RHIB (small boat) runs were made to exchange plaques and say good-byes, and to allow a tour of the Ron Brown by Nauru High School seniors. The Ron Brown's next stop is Kwajalein, with some seafloor mapping before docking. The mapping was requested by the NOAA ship Ka'imimoana, which will deploy buoys for the Kwajalein Experiment [KWAJEX], the Ron Brown's next mission. Previous Weeks' Highlights July
