Nauru99 Island Background

Nauru Island

The island of Nauru (right), which is the world's smallest republic, is located in the western South Pacific approximately 1,200 miles northwest of Papua, New Guinea. More than 10,000 people live on the island, which is 8.2 square miles in size.

Nauru's economy is based on the export of high-grade phosphates mined from the island's central plateau. While export royalties make Nauru one of the richest (per capita) countries in the world, mines will be depleted around the turn of the century, so the Naurian government is investing in its economy to help ensure the future livibility of the island.

The ARM Program chose the island to set up a Cloud and Radiation Testbed (CART) site (below) because of its location on the eastern edge of the warm pool under La Niņa conditions.

The physical ARM site is located in the Denigomodu District on the northwest shore of the island near the General Hospital. Installation of the CART site began in late September 1998, and operations began in mid-November.
