![]() Cumulus clouds, which are plentiful in the Tropical Western Pacific region, are part of a great "heat engine" serving the rest of the world. |
Air, Land and Sea CycleNauru99 was an international research collaboration conducted on and around the island of Nauru in the Tropical Western Pacific during the summer of 1999. Through this international research campaign, involving the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the Japan Marine Science and Technology Center (JAMSTEC), scientists gathered first-ever data on oceanic and atmospheric processes to better understand the influence of the tropics - our world's "heat engine." DOE's Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program sponsored this campaign. The ARM Program is the Department's premier climate change research program. |
