Kunio Yoneyama graduated from Japan's Kyushu University with a Bachelor of Science in 1988 and a Master of Science in 1990.

He went to work directly after graduating at JAMSTEC as a research scientist in the Ocean Research Department.

During the past nine years, Yoneyama focused his research on Oceanographic observation in the tropical western Pacific, specifically the Japanese Pacific Climate Study, Tropical Ocean Climate Study, and the Air-Sea InTeraction in the Equatorial Pacific. This experience has prepared Yoneyama for his position on the Nauru team.
