New Research and Educational Uses of the NSDL/AVC

Thirteenth Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Science Team Meeting

The NSF National Science Digital Library (NSDL) has its grand opening on Dec, 4th 2002. One of the 18 featured NSDL collections was the Atmospheric Visualization Collection (AVC), which focuses on creating a visual interface to improve accessibility and usability of the ARM data. Two essential components help the AVC improve the usability of the ARM data. The first is an archive of ARM data images. The second is a collection of educational material based that use ARM data images. The data image archive has expanded from just the Southern Great Plains (SGP) site to include data images from the North Slope of Alaska (NSA) site and the Tropic West Pacific (TWP) site. The visualization tools producing these quicklooks are being modified to be more resilient and significant progress has been made towards combining quicklook capabilities with those available at the University of Utah. Besides displaying many of these improvements we'll also demonstrate the new user interface allowing access to the NSA data images, we hope in the future to make the TWP data images available through a similar user interface. While the archive of ARM data images has many uses for ARM scientists and others in the atmospheric community, collaboration with teachers has also resulted in various lesson plans for using ARM data in the classroom. We will demonstrate a new user interface to access these lesson plans and review how teachers and faculty can use the AVC to collaborate on educational material development. Currently the AVC averages 300-450 unique users per week with visitors from over 60 countries. These are research users as well as students and teachers independently pursuing their scientific interests in the ARM data. This poster will review recent AVC capabilities that will further improve usability of the ARM data by the research and educational community.
