Climatology of Stratus Clouds at the SGP: A Radiation Based Study

Sengupta, M.(a), Ackerman, T.P.(a), and Clothiaux, E.E.(b), Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (a), The Pennsylvania State University (b)
Twelfth Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Science Team Meeting

The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program is a source of continuous data that can be used for various short-term climatological studies. Using multiple datasets from ARM for the Southern Great Plains (SGP) Central facility, we develop a climatology of stratus cloud occurring during the daytime for a period of 4 years from 1997 to 2000. Temporal fluctuations in the properties of stratus clouds as well as their impact on solar radiation are investigated. The results of the study are useful in characterizing seasonal or annual variations as well as identifying anomalies that may be present. This study is especially useful for generalization of results from intensive studies that use limited data.
