Communications Upgrade for SGP Extended Facilities

Smith, J. (a), Reed, R. (a), Eagan, R. (b), and Ermold, B. (c), Aeromet Inc. (a), Argonne National Laboratory (b), Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (c)
Eleventh Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Science Team Meeting

This project dramatically improves data availability by using the Internet to transfer the data collected by instruments located at remote sites in the Southern Great Plains (SGP). The new system consists of a ruggedized notebook computer with network attached serial ports. The system collects data from the instruments each hour, then transfers the data back to the Central Facility (CF) via the Internet. The notebook automatically calls a local Internet Service Provider (ISP), it then uses the file transfer protocol (FTP) to transfer compressed data files to the Site Data System (SDS). This process sends the data from all instruments to the CF each hour.
