Brookhaven National Laboratory Seeking Advanced Applications Engineer

The Environmental and Climate Sciences Department of Brookhaven National Laboratory is seeking an advanced applications engineer in its Data Management and Software Engineering Group. The primary responsibilities of the position include: designing, maintaining, and improving databases and web application tools containing scientific data collected for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Climate Research Facility.
The successful applicant will be self-motivated, demonstrate clear written and oral communication, and enjoy working in a group setting in an open and cooperative manner. Requirements include:
- A bachelor’s degree in computer science, information science, library science, or the physical sciences
- At least five years of experience in database design, relational databases (e.g., PostGres, Sybase), web services, SQL, and Unix/Linux
- Expertise in scientific data analysis and software development.
A Master’s degree is highly preferred. The preferred candidate will have an interest in atmospheric (especially cloud, aerosol, precipitation) instrumentation and prior experience with large scientific data sets. Additional desired skills include knowledge of software code in Python, R, PHP, Perl, Java, XML, ArcGIS, REST, and SOAP.
