The Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies at the University of Oklahoma is seeking a research associate with strong attention to detail and good computer skills to join the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Climate Research Facility Data Quality (DQ) Office. The DQ Office supports the needs of the DOE’s Atmospheric System Research (ASR) program.
ASR is a long-term science project to better characterize aerosol, cloud, and radiation properties in climate models.
The primary responsibility of the DQ Office is to coordinate the creation of software tools to inspect data and assess their quality and communicate these assessments to the program and end-users of ARM data.
The new member of the ARM DQ Office will work at the National Weather Center in Norman, OK, which houses a unique confederation of University of Oklahoma, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and state organizations that work in partnership to improve our understanding of the Earth’s atmosphere.
Responsibilities
- Develop new software for displaying, analyzing and inspecting ARM data
- Help maintain and improve the DQ Office data quality explorer
- Work with instrument mentors to improve data quality analysis techniques and visualization
- Communicate and work effectively with other members of the DQ Office and the ARM Program
- Communicate information on data quality problems to site operators and instrument mentors
- Help mentor undergraduate student analysts who analyze ARM data
- Participate in relevant research projects
- Help represent the DQ Office at meetings and conferences
Preferred Experience/Qualifications
- M.S. in atmospheric science, earth system science, meteorology or related field
- Strong computer programming skills, particularly in Linux or UNIX environments
- Knowledge of a scripting language such as Perl, Python, Bash/C shell script, etc.
- Web programming experience (Javascript, PHP, HTML, CGI, etc.) recommended
- Experience with IDL or Matlab highly desirable
- Experience or familiarity with meteorological instrumentation and data analysis, including scientific data formats such as NetCDF
- Strong attention to detail, and ability to work independently on a project
- Competent skills in oral and written communication, and the ability to collaborate
