Scientific Data Management Help Needed at Brookhaven

The Environmental and Climate Sciences Department of Brookhaven National Laboratory seeks an advanced applications engineer in scientific data management for their Data Management and Software Engineering Group. This position will be responsible for designing, maintaining, and improving databases, and database and web application tools, containing information about scientific data collected for the DOE Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Climate Research Facility. In addition, the successful applicant will be assigning metadata for the ARM Facility to facilitate automated data reprocessing, data documentation, data discovery, data retrieval, and analysis.

Interested individuals need at least five years experience in database design, relational databases (e.g., PostGres, Sybase), web services, and SQL. Experience in software and database development on Unix/Linux systems is required. A bachelor’s degree in computer science or physical science is the minimum educational requirement, though a Master’s degree is highly preferred.

Experience with Python, PHP, Perl, Java, REST, and SOAP is desired. Interest in atmospheric (cloud, aerosol, and precipitation) instrumentation, and prior experience with large scientific data sets is a plus.
