University of Chicago’s Computation Institute Seeks Postdoc

Published: 15 February 2014

The University of Chicago’s Computation Institute is seeking a postdoctoral scholar. This position is for 2 years, with possible extension of 1 year based on performance. The position is expected to begin September 2014 and review of applications will begin immediately.

This postdoctoral scholar will participate in an aircraft field campaign, Cloud System Evolution in the Trades (CSET), to study the transition of stratocumulus to cumulus clouds in the North Pacific to be held in summer 2015. The candidate is expected to actively participate in the field campaign and assist in operating and analyzing data from the various instruments onboard the aircraft, particularly the Doppler cloud radar and lidar. Data will be used to deduce in-cloud vertical air motion and atmospheric radiative heating rate profiles among other meteorological parameters.

Successful applicants will possess a PhD in atmospheric or related science, preferably with prior experience in data analysis of relevant observations, and good skills in scientific deduction and communication of scientific findings. Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience in all or some of the following areas:

  • analyzing data collected by Doppler cloud radars and lidars
  • using radiative transfer models
  • working with data from aircraft in-situ instruments.

To apply, send a one-page statement of research interests and relevant experience and curriculum vitae, including contacts for three references, to Julie Wulf-Knoerzer at jwulf@ci.uchicago.edu with the subject VPG Postdoc.

Questions regarding the position may be directed to Dr. Virendra P. Ghate.
