LOS ALAMOS, N.M.–A newly designed education website sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) features activities and information about climate change and atmospheric science for students and teachers. Education and outreach staff involved in DOE’s ARM Climate Research Facility recently released the redesigned website, which can be found at http://education.arm.gov. The new design provides a fresh look, easier navigation, and great new learning activities, but still features the familiar faces of Professor Polar Bear, Teacher Turtle, and PI Prairie Dog. These “mascots” represent the ARM Climate Research Facility’s research locales in Oklahoma, Alaska, and the tropics.

The Education website is now divided into three easy-to-navigate sections: Homeroom, Study Hall, and Teachers’ Lounge. Homeroom features information about the ARM Climate Research Facility’s education and outreach efforts, providing news, events and publications. Study Hall is a student resource that includes quizzes, activities, and commonly asked questions and answers about climate, weather, and global warming. This section also includes a new “Just for Fun” page that offers coloring pages, word seeks, and more! The Teachers’ Lounge provides teachers with lesson plans, activity ideas and valuable background information about atmospheric science and global climate change.

The Education and Outreach Program for DOE’s ARM Climate Research Facility strives to promote basic science awareness by increasing skills needed to understand environmental science and climate change studies. The program aims to build relationship between scientist, teachers, students, and the community.
