Known for its emphasis on "green" living, Portland, Oregon, hosted the A&WMA's 101st Annual Conference and Exhibition.

With a theme of “Integrating Science and Sustainability,” the Air and Waste Management Association (A&WMA) 101st Annual Conference and Exhibition was held on June 24-27 in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Sylvia Edgerton, ARM Science Liaison, attended the meeting and chaired the 2008 Critical Review symposium, where a panel of experts debated the finding and conclusions presented by the featured speaker, Michael MacCracken of The Climate Institute. The full Critical Review paper was published in the June issue of the Journal of the Air & Waste Management Association, A&WMA’s flagship publication of peer-reviewed research. Dr. Edgerton has served as Chair of the Editorial Review Board of the journal for the last two years.

MacCracken’s Critical Review paper is titled, “Prospects for Future Climate Change and the Reasons for Early Action.” Dr. Edgerton wrote a paper, also published in the June issue, giving an Introduction to the Critical Review. Edgerton’s paper outlined the historical context of climate policy as it has developed over the last 20 years. The expert panel included: Dr. Mark Z. Jacobson, Professor and Director of the Atmosphere/Energy Program at Stanford University; Dr. Mark C. Trexler, Managing Director of Global Consulting Services, EcoSecurities; Dr. Carol E. Whitman, Senior Legislative Principal for the Environment at the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association; and Dr. Alberto Ayala, Chief of the Climate Change Mitigation and Emissions Branch of the California Air Resources Board. The October issue will summarize invited and audience comments presented during the June symposium.
