Scott Collis, top, and Pavlos Kollias, bottom, are ARM radar scientists presenting at the radar conference.

Interested in learning more about open source radar software or cm- and mm-wavelength radar applications? Radar scientists from the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Climate Research Facility will be leading workshops on those topics at the 37th Conference on Radar Meteorology.

The conference will be held 14-18 September 2015 in Norman, Oklahoma, and is being sponsored by the American Meteorological Society and organized by the AMS Committee on Radar Meteorology. ARM radar scientists will be leading two of the five courses at the workshop.

Scott Collis, Argonne National Laboratory, is the lead instructor for the AMS Short Course on Open Source Radar Software (PDF). Assisted by other developers, he will be introducing attendees to the Python programming language, exploring the Python-ARM Radar Toolkit, and showcasing several applications to ARM and other radar systems.

Pavlos Kollias, McGill University, is the lead instructor for the AMS Short Course on CM- and MM-Wavelength Radar Applications (PDF). ARM is a world leader in the synergistic use of cm- and mm-wavelength radars, breaking artificial barriers between the weather and climate radar communities. The course will focus on the synergistic use of these radar systems and highlights the unique holistic radar-view of the water cycle in action from cloud to precipitation available at the ARM sites.

The other three sessions will be:

  • short course on dual-polarized phased array antennas for weather radars
  • short course on radar aeroecology
  • basic principles of weather radar polarimetry and its operational applications.

Register before 16 August for the early-bird rate or 16 August to 12 September for the regular rate. On-site registration will also be available, with an additional fee. A special hotel rate is available at the Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center, for reservations made before midnight on 5 August.
