Call for Abstracts: Milankovitch Anniversary Symposium

Published: 26 May 2009

The Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SASA) is hosting an international symposium to celebrate the 130th anniversary of the birth of Milutin Milankovitch. The symposium, “Climate Change at the Eve of the Second Decade of the Century,” will be held in Belgrade, Serbia, September 22-25, 2009. Notable sponsors of this event include the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS), and the Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX).

Milankovitch is perhaps best known for the “Milankovitch Cycles,” which refer to the astronomical periods ranging from 40,000-100,000 years that are strongly correlated with long-term climate change cycles (i.e., ice ages). The cycles have to do with variations in astronomical parameters, such as the tilt of the Earth’s axis.

This international event will provide an opportunity for scientists from diverse fields and backgrounds to gather together to discuss a variety of related topics including:

  • Rapid global climate change
  • Climate feedbacks
  • Regional climate modeling
  • Hydrological extremes
  • Eco-hydrological approach.

In addition to the topics listed above, selected papers may address developments in paleo data and its relevance in predicting future climate changes under a variety of greenhouse gas scenarios.

Abstracts are due by June 30, 2009, and should be submitted to the Organizing Committee of the Symposium Milutin Milankovitch, 2009, at (milankovic09@sanu.ac.rs). The submission deadline for final papers is August 15, 2009. For more information, contact Djordje Sijacki (sijacki@phy.bg.ac.yu) or Fedor Mesinger (fedor.m@comcast.net) or see the symposium website.
