Year of Tropical Convection Begins

Published: 8 November 2008

A new international science project commenced August 2008—the Year of Tropical Convection (YOTC) is a joint initiative of the World Climate Research Programme – World Weather Research Programme (WWRP)/The Observing System Research and Predictability Experiment (THORPEX). Focusing on organized tropical convection its prediction and predictability, YOTC is a year of coordinated observing, modelling, and forecasting. Noteworthy progress includes:

  • Science plan published. Journal articles will soon be available in a special edition of BAMS.
  • High resolution analyses and forecasts being provided through European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) for the YOTC time period.
  • Developing an implementation plan.
  • A YOTC website has been started.
  • An email distribution list to be created.

To participate or be included on email distribution, contact Mitchell Moncrieff, NCAR, or Duane Waliser, Jet Propulsion Laboratory/NASA.
