Up Close and Personal with the G-1

On Thursday, July 21, several Washington State University (WSU) students got the chance to visit the hangar where the ARM Aerial Facility (AAF) aircraft is located. Shelley Presley, Assistant Research Professor at WSU’s Laboratory for Atmospheric Research, accompanied the students, who are studying atmospheric chemistry as part of a summer research program.

Celine Kluzek, AAF Operations Lead, gave the future scientists a tour of the Gulfstream-1 aircraft, the AAF’s airborne research laboratory. The G-1 is used in ARM field campaigns to gather data about aerosol and cloud properties, as well as gas-phase measurements.

The students were especially interested in the measurement techniques of the externally mounted instruments, and were particularly impressed with the visualization of ice crystals and snowflakes. Another highlight of the visit was a discussion with one of the aircraft pilots and mechanics, Bill Svancara, in the cockpit of the G-1.
The AAF looks forward to seeing some of these bright students in our intern program next year!

Students in attendance: Etta L. Axtell, Kayla P. Warden, Andrew J. Gabel
, Paige M. Pruisner, Matthew Dean Woelfle, Ayrton A. Bryan, Yuhao Wu, ShanKara B. Johnson, Kyle J. Morse, David G. Erickson, and Elaina R. Shawver. For more pictures of their visit, check out the AAF set on Flickr.
