TX-2002 AIRS Validation Campaign

18 November 2002 - 13 December 2002

Lead Scientist: Robert Knuteson

Observatory: sgp, sgp

NASA is conducting an aircraft campaign for the validation of the AIRS and MODIS instruments on the EOS Aqua platform. The NASA high altitude ER-2 aircraft will be based in San Antonio, Texas. The ARM SGP central facility is one of the ground truth sites for the aircraft overflights. AIRS science team member Dr. Henry E. Revercomb is responsible for validation of the AIRS surface temperature and emissivity products.

This IOP proposal is to deploy the University of Wisconsin AERIBAGO research vehicle to the ARM central facility to augment the existing ARM suite of instruments. The AERIBAGO will be used to confirm the absolute calibration of the AERI facility instrument and the downlooking IRTs.

The IDP2 location at the CF is requested because of convenient access to power and internet while having a view to the "natural" vegetation and bare soil. The AERIBAGO will collect high time resolution observations of the atmospheric downwelling infrared and periodic observations of the upwelling infrared from the surface.

The proposed time period of the deployment is 18 November through 13 December which overlaps with the NASA aircraft campaign. Access to power and internet are requested.
