Campaign : MWR Inter-Comparison Study

2006.10.09 - 2006.11.30

Lead Scientist : Maria Cadeddu

For data sets, see below.

Description

The principal objective of the campaign was to determine the repeatability of ACRF MWR brightness temperature measurements. Secondary objectives included comparisons of precipitable water vapor (PWV) derived from MWR brightness temperature measurements with PWV derived from radiosondes and GPS (SuomiNet) to vicariously assess the accuracy of the MWR brightness temperatures and retrievals.

Six MWRs were located at the SGP Central Facility and collect simultaneous data. The comparison was useful to determine hardware and software issues that might affect the retrieved PWV and LWP. Possible hardware issues were due to the age of the radiometers (> 10 years) and to the fact that they operate in a harsh environment. Software issues were related to the way the instrument is calibrated (i.e. number of tip curves used in the algorithm).
