Surface Albedo IOP

20 October 2004 - 26 October 2004

Lead Scientist: Alexander Trishchenko

Observatory: sgp, sgp

Purpose of this field campaign was to collect surface albedo spectra for representative surface types in the ARM SGP CART site area during the autumn conditions, to gather information useful for conducting surface type classification from aerial/satellite remote sensing data, to develop the detailed spectral model of surface reflectance over the ARM SGP CART site area for the autumn conditions. Information was required as boundary condition for radiative transfer modeling, cloud and atmospheric dynamics modeling, carbon and hydrological studies, remote sensing studies. This was our 4th surface spectral albedo IOP. We had already conducted measurements for other 3 seasons: winter (February, 2004), spring ( May, 2003), summer (August, 2002). We focused on extensive measurements at the Central Facility (CF) and around nearby extended (EF) facilities to cover as much as possible the natural range of variability of surface reflective properties over the area. The measurement period coincided with Landsat and Terra/ASTER/MODIS overpass over SGP CART site on October 24, 2004. Ground and satellite observations were used together for validation studies and development of albedo models of typical surface types in the SGP CART site area for autumn conditions. As a final product of this IOP, we developed the detailed spectral model of surface reflectance over the ARM SGP CART site area and made it available for ARM community.
