Precision Gas Sampling (PGS) Validation Field Campaign

11 July 2001 - 25 July 2001

Lead Scientist: Marc Fischer

Observatory: sgp, sgp

To provide validation data for the PGS equipment that has been deployed by Dr. Margaret Torn (Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory) on the 60-meter tower at the SGP central facility, Dr. Torn plans to deploy several self-contained CO2 flux stations within a radius of 7 km of the tower. The flux stations would be deployed, operated and maintained by LBL personnel.

Scientific hypothesis: Ecosystem-atmosphere exchange of carbon and energy varies with climate, soil, and land management, in ways 1) that influence the CO2 flux and pbl concentration in ARM CART and 2) that we can model and predict.

Approach to test hypothesis: Conduct campaigns to measure CO2 and energy fluxes from several fields simultaneously. Model fluxes from same sites. Use second model to link fluxes within tower footprint to CO2 flux and concentration observed at the 60-m tower.

Activity Summary

July, 2001: Three systems were deployed in four fields during a 2-week shakedown period. December 2001 to present: One system deployed at base of CF tower.
