Description

The cause and extent of elevated ozone levels that are often found during summer in the southeastern United States were the focus of the intensive Southern Oxidants Study (SOS) 1995 Nashville/Middle Tennessee Ozone Study. Six aircraft were extensively instrumented and were deployed in concert during the summer of 1995 from the Nashville Metropolitan Airport. Two of these aircraft were equipped with a full array of instrumentation for study of ozone chemistry and had sufficient range and endurance to conduct measurements over large areas. The remaining four aircraft were devoted to more specialized tasks. Researchers from several DOE laboratories used the DOE G-1 to measure the vertical and regional distribution of ozone and its precursors to quantify the contribution of urban emissions to ozone production.
