MPACELIDAR
M-PACE - Polarization Diversity Lidar (PDL)
1 September 2004 - 21 October 2004
Lead Scientist: Kenneth Sassen
Observatory: nsa, nsa
In support of M-PACE, a Polarization Diversity Lidar (PDL), was deployed to the NSA. Unlike the micro pulses of the MPL (micropulse lidar) present at NSA, the PDL used a continuous signal and allowed the distinction between spherical and non spherical particles, i.e. between water droplets and ice crystals, for example. Tilting the instrument also allowed the distinction of platelets, if the ice crystals formed plates.
