Observations and Modeling of the Green Ocean Amazon: Oxidation Flow Reactor

20 January 2014 - 31 March 2014

Lead Scientist: Jose-Luis Jimenez

Observatory: amf, mao

An Oxidation Flow Reactor (OFR) was used to quantify and understand secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation and aging at the T3 site during GoAmazon2014. In the OFR, high OH concentrations are produced by in situ photolysis of O2 and H2O, and high O3 is produced by direct injection of O3 (produced externally). When coupled with state-of-the-art aerosol and gas detection systems, the OFR is capable of rapid quantification of SOA production and chemical evolution, with equivalent atmospheric oxidant ages from a few hours up to ~3 weeks. At GoAmazon2014, the output of the flow reactor was measured using an aerosol mass spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS), scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS), and proton-transfer reaction mass spectrometer (PTR-TOFMS). These data will contribute to a better understanding of the Aerosol Life Cycle by investigating the influence of gaseous and particulate anthropogenic emissions on SOA formation in a biogenic rich environment. The HR-ToF-AMS and SMPS will provide size-resolved chemical composition, oxidation state, and number concentrations of total non-refractory submicron aerosol particles that are formed and aged in the OFR. The PTR-TOFMS will quantify the consumption and production of VOCs by oxidation of ambient VOCs and particles in the OFR. These complementary particle-phase and gas-phase data will be compared and contrasted between pristine and polluted airmasses to investigate the anthropogenic influence on SOA sources, formation, and aging in the Amazon rainforest.
