Campaign : Colorado: Direct Measurements of Snowfall

2010.11.15 - 2011.04.25

Lead Scientist : Ian McCubbin

Description

This campaign was in direct support of the AMF2 deployment during the Storm Peak Validation Experiment (StormVEx), held between November 2010 and April 2011 in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. While a wide array of remote and direct sensors were deployed during the StormVEx campaign, no reliable direct snowfall precipitation measurements were planned to be part of StormVEx activities. This crucial measurement gap was addressed with the deployment of three precipitation stations to provide measurements of snowfall rate and accumulation. This information was made available to all researchers as part of the combined StormVEx data set. The deployment locations were the mountain summit Storm Peak Laboratory (SPL) site, the mid-slope AMF2 Thunderhead site, and the Valley Floor site.
