SGP Rural Driving Hazards
The rural location of the Southern Great Plains (SGP) site facilities requires that visitors travel on unpaved, dirt and gravel, roads. Visitors should be aware of the driving hazards this presents by taking the following precautions:
- Proceed cautiously: Many rural roads have unmarked and blind intersections.
- Slow down: Sanded and gravel raods can cause a vehicle to swerve.
- Maintain a safe following distance: During the dry season, vehicles kick up dust clouds that can hinder sight.
- Coordinate with the central facility: Roads can become impassible due to rain and snow; check with the central facility to receive the latest road condition information.
In addition, the recent increase in the deer population in both Oklahoma and Kansas has presented more driving hazards in areas where deer could be concealed (e.g., areas with high vegetation, wooded areas). While deer tend to travel mostly at dusk or dawn, visitors should increase awareness and slow down when driving at these times and through these areas. Remember that one deer usually means that there are more around!
